The MPPOA Legal Defense Fund has recently scored an impressive federal PSOB (Public Safety Officers' Benefits) victory on behalf of the surviving spouse of a member who died in the line of duty. This hard fought victory was earned at the federal administrative appeal level, following an initial denial by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, U.S. Department of Justice. This victory will benefit all members of Minnesota law enforcement who may become similarly situated. There is no other police legal defense plan in Minnesota, except for your MPPOA Legal Defense Fund, who would ever have pursued this appeal. This victory is a source of great pride for all of us here at the MPPOA. On July 8, 2006, Clay County Deputy Scott Rogers was found deceased in the weight room of the County Law Enforcement Center. During his daily shift, Deputy Rogers had been involved in a traffic stop of an individual, which later would turn out to be a crucial fact in the appeal. Deputy Rogers subsequently died as the result of a heart attack during his post-shift workout.
