I attended a talk by former Works Triumph, BMC and MiniWorld rally navigator Willy Cave on Monday 29 March, at the Navigation Inn at Stoke Bruerne. He was telling the Historic Rally Car Register (Northants and Bedfordshire region) about his 50 years of rallying life. He spoke fondly of his life as a Works navigator with Standard Triumph, Rover and BMC, and recalled one of his more famous retirements. He was leading the 1963 Alpine Rally, in Mini Cooper 977 ARX driven by John Sprinzel, and the steering wheel and column came off. They hit the rock wall and rolled out of the event. He also related a variety of tales about going over the edge, a fate feared by most rally crews.
