The toast of 'The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy' was proposed by Mr. J. Burgess Winter, President and chief executive officer of BHP Copper, the President responding; abridged versions of their speeches are published below. The toast of 'Our Guests' was proposed by the President-Elect, D. K. Presgrave, and acknowledged—in a highly amusing response—by Lord Taylor of Gryfe. Burgess Winter introduced himself by referring as follows to the change in his position that had arisen through the recent merger of Magma Copper with BHP.
