The toast of 'The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy' was proposed by Mr. Algy Cluff, Chairman and chief executive of Cluff Mining, Ltd.; the text of his speech is published below, together with the President's response. The toast of 'Our Guests' was proposed by the President-Elect, Dr. C. V. Phillips, and acknowledged by Sir Derek Day. 'A FEW YEARS AGO I visited a mine in southern Africa which my company was operating. After the customary presentations by the heads of departments the mine manager asked me if I would like to visit the new workers' houses, which we duly did.
