Massive increases in shipping rates are hurting recyclers in Europe who ship recovered fiber exports to China and other Asian countries, reported sources for the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) in its quarterly scrap fiber report. During the first quarter of 2017, mills in Indonesia were clamoring for material in midst of increased demand for fiber in the U.S. and China. However, after March, most Chinese mills halted their orders for material in the U.S. due to a sharp drop in finished product prices in China.
