Long before global warming and the need to cut food miles was a glint in David Miliband's eye, Britain's top food retailers had recognised the growing consumer demand for local produce. It may be pure coincidence, but that demand has grown fastest in the past five years - exactly the time frame of the hugely successful Tesco Cheese Challenge. And with the fifth anniversary coming around this year, the international retailer is putting even more emphasis on local sourcing for the 2007 competition.
