I had two close calls in aircraft, one in a helicopter and one in a DC-3. Sikorsky We had only two kinds of helicopters in Korea. Or, at least I never saw another kind. One was the Bell, a small two-seater, one for the pilot and one for a passenger. The ones that transported the wounded had a wooden box on each of the skids and they took badly wounded men direct from the front lines or the rear aid station to a medical company or a hospital ship. I rode in one once just to get the feel of it and to take some aerial photos. The other helicopter was the Sikorsky, a much bigger machine with a pilot and co-pilot (who was also the navigator when making trips to unfamiliar areas), and a big cabin with room for six stretchers and attendants, but with no seats. They never went up to. the front lines but came in to the hospital pads with ease.
