My brother, Rev. Dayton W. Kannon, swapped a Bible for a rifle during WWII and miraculously lived to reverse the swap. He could have had a clergy deferment but he reasoned, "I'm no better than the other boys." He had already finished two years of basic ROTC training at Louisiana State University when war was declared and he enrolled in a program for officer training at the "old war school." His orders were changed and all the LSU cadets became Privates in the infantry at Camp Roberts. After six weeks of basic training they were shipped to New Guinea in a regiment of about 2,000 men. PFC Kannon had received an award for his seriousness in basic: a new Browning automatic rifle, and he became a BAR man.
