Dr. Dave Hnida is a rare kind of warrior, not cast from the normal mold. He joined the U.S. Army in 2004 at the age of 48, motivated by a number of reasons. Perhaps primary of them was his love for a father who had remained distant from him most of his life, a father haunted by the demons of his own experiences in WWII. Just days before his death, Dave's father opened up to his son during a long drive, telling of the horror of sending his men into battle and the unconquerable guilt he felt when they were wounded and killed. The seeds planted by this conversation began to grow into Dave's search for some way to do his part to ease these meniories.
