Why so late to do something?

On my drive to and from work, while listening to a local radio station, there is one commercial that stands out to me. I've seen the same on television with screen and music personalities. It's a push to provide jobs for our veterans. Excuse me? Why is there a need for a promotional campaign and a congressional delegation to get jobs/careers for "America's Heroes" when they are no longer serving their country? Shouldn't I, a Desert Storm veteran with an honorable discharge, be more strongly considered for a job than another person just off the street? There has to be an initiative? Really?
