The 20 most numerous operational fixed-wing fighter types range from the 1960s vintage Northrop F-5 to the Lockheed Martin F-35, and account for more than 10,000 aircraft between them. The majority of these are what are termed "fourth generation" fighters, with pulse Doppler radar, beyond visual range (BVR) missile capability, and often some degree of multi-role capability, but the list includes two fifth generation fighters and a raft of older Cold War aircraft, including some more specialised dedicated attack aircraft.
