The Canadian Army Fleet

The Canadian Army combat vehicle fleet consists primarily of wheeled armoured vehicles. These include the Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) III, the BISON, and COYOTE. Originally derived from the MOWAG (now GDELS) PIRANHA design and first fielded in the 1970s, then as the 6 X 6 Armoured Vehicle General Purpose (AVGP), they included the GRIZZLY infantry carrier, COUGAR fire support vehicle with a 76mm cannon, and HUSKY recovery vehicle. These were manufactured in Canada by General Motors of Canada (GM). With the US Marine Corps' (USMC) selection of GM's 8 X 8 LAV, an upgraded AVGP, the Canadian Forces took advantage of this production programme and followed suit. They have continued to benefit from the USMC LAV as well as the subsequent US Army STRYKER programme.
