Combat aircraft could be defined as being aeroplanes whose primary purpose is to destroy enemy forces, equipment, materiel and infrastructure, using air-launched armament to deliver direct military effect. Such a definition usefully excludes reconnaissance, ISR, ISTAR and transport aircraft, and in this article, we will also exclude dedicated ASW aircraft, MPA and combat helicopters.
