Close Air Support is one of those companies that exists for one reason and one reason only - to reduce (hopefully eliminate?) the incidence of so-called 'friendly fire' and collateral damage in CAS missions. In the Gulf War, 35 US service personnel lost their lives and 72 were wounded in CAS incidents. Since then, Canadian, British, French and American service personnel have continued to suffer - as have those from several other nations - from events which should, in theory, be entirely avoidable. Despite the development of far-reaching regulatory environments and increasingly detailed training scenarios, 'friendly fire' is still a problem - and the staff at Close Air Support, based in Bristol close to the UK MoD's procurement arm, being predominantly ex-forces themselves and therefore more painfully aware than the rest of us about the consequences of getting this equation wrong, are totally committed to finding effective solutions.
