Special Operations Forces & 21st Century Warfare

For most of their existence to date, U.S. and allied nation Special Operations Forces (SOF) have been perceived as, and treated as, sub-organizations inside the traditional loops of warfare. U.S. Army SOF/ Green Berets, U.S. Navy Sea Air & Land (SEAL) organizations, U.S. Air Force and Marine Corps pathfinder and commando-style units and their foreign counterparts have been stepchildren of the larger family of conventional military elements, performing within a universe dominated by infantry, artillery and armour divisions, surface-ship battle groups and combat + combat-support aircraft wings.
