The Luftwaffe's variety of tasks require efficient, capable, and versatile transport aircraft, that allow transport tasks at hand to be fulfilled without delay. The four Airbus A310 multi-role transporter tanker (MRTT) aircraft assigned to the Federal Ministry of Defence Special Air Mission Wing based at Cologne-Wahn are part of the German air transport assets and can be configured to perform different transport tasks. The Airbus A310 MRTT can be used as an all-passenger aircraft, as a combined freight and passenger aircraft, for the transport of "stabilised intensive-care patients," injured or wounded persons (as a "flying intensive-care unit," AIRMEDEVAC) or as a "flying gas station." Its technology and technical design is based on the operational and mission-related requirements and on the experience and expertise gained by the Luftwaffe in this field of operations over decades.
