The Philippines is poised to engage in an Implementing Agreement (IA) with the Italian government to accelerate the procurement of defence equipment and materials as part of the country's military capability upgrade programme. Philippines DoND Secretary Voltaire T. Gazmin met with Italian Defense Minister Giampaolo Di Paola on 30 January to sign an IA between the two nations, which will help expedite the procurement from the Italian defense industry suppliers with the help of the Italian MoD. Medium lift aircrafts, coast watch system radars, multi-role combat aircrafts and long range patrol aircrafts are some of the equipment Italy offers. The Philippines has already purchased 18 basic trainer aircraft from Italian company Alenia Aermacchi, which completed the delivery last year. The IA will facilitate the implementation of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) modernisation programme, one of the programmes pushed forward by the Aquino administration.
