The Romanian Aviation and Defence Industry

To conclude, Romanian aviation and defence sectors, excluding Aerostar and UMC, are going through a very difficult time. The new wave of restructuring and privatisation may bring the necessary to the industry respite. However, it needs to be remembered that the past experience in restructuring and privatisation was not successful. Whether this time around both procedures will be successful remains to be seen. Finally, Romanian industry officials remained reticent and did not provide the author with the information pertained to the state of aviation and defence industry. Still, it can be judged by what is known to the author that that the industry as whole remains in a bad financial shape and is not yet out from the doldrums. Although Romanian officials may disagree with the author's assessment their reticence and non co-operative behaviour shows that the restructuring of the industry is not proceeding accordingly.
