The realm of unmanned system (UnSys) for naval tasks is quickly growing as an increasing number of naval services are considering how to exploit these new capabilities. UAS are, no doubt, the ones getting most of the attention by planners, industry and the public opinion, mostly for their growing involvement in combat operations. Disregarding the wide and fast growing world of UAS, surface and underwater unmanned systems (UUS) are definitely winning their budget battle. The US military described a number of areas where USVs and UUVs could prove to be beneficial, identifying common and specific requirements of both to accomplish different types of missions. These include ASW, ISR, EW, AntiSurface Warfare, Support to Special Forces, and, of course, Mine Counter Measures, Port Security and Force Protection.
