Establishing a local, self-contained defence industry has had vital importance for Turkey; as for this purpose, under the directions and supervision of the Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM), Turkey's defence procurement model has undergone a gradual change 1990-2011; going from co-production to local design, development and production (covering developing indigenous designs and system integration programmes such as the ALTAY MBT, MILGEM Corvette, ANKA MALE UAV, HURKUS Trainer, AselPOD targeting pod, and the GOKTUERK Ⅱ EO/IR satellite).
