Substantive Capability or Politically Acceptable Compromise?

Power projection is intimately enmeshed with politics. This much is obvious to even the most casual of observers of the modern military. British observers, however, may be forgiven for thinking that politics is today playing an even more prominent role in shaping military capability than has been the case for decades when looking at the current state of the Royal Navy. Which is a sad statement for a nation that once boasted unrivalled power projection, commerce protection and intervention capability through its naval strength.
