As Donald Trump continues to lead in US polls for Republican nomination for candidate for president, it is important to examine how his candidacy and potential election to US Commander in Chief would affect the US military. While his statements to date have been vague, we can read between the lines, as well as reach out to military strategists for their interpretation of his comments. To start, Trump comes out as a hardline hawk, ready to take action on multiple fronts to defend both America's border, and her honour. He continues to see both Iran and Iraq as threats, and a military intervention at the US-Mexico border is not out of the question. His answer to the perceived Iran-Iraq problem is to bomb them both. His plan after that? Put ExxonMobil in charge. However, current military analysts find this approach to be lacking in both nuance and likely positive outcome. Bombing any existing infrastructure is just going to extend the rebuilding process. And the damage will largely affect civilians who will not welcome military policing in the area to protect oil companies, nor would they welcome foreign oil companies themselves!
