An overabundance of containerised systems on the military market means it is possible to only highlight a cross-section of systems that represent a trend toward specialised engineering and materials married with sophisticated structural designs. A steel box made in a limited range of standard dimensions with integral lifting eyes at the corners, the ISO container, is a deceptively simple technology that revolutionised bulk transport by sea and by road, and is now firmly established as a tool for rapid deployment of a very wide range of capabilities in emergency response and military peace support, COIN, and full scale warfighting. Just about anything the military needs can be packed into a container, either simply for storage and transport or as self-contained and fully operational systems, all of which can take advantage of the inter-modal transport arrangements and handling systems and other infrastructure that has grown up around the humble cargo container.
