The US Army is older than the nation itself, taking the short life of its precursor into account; the Continental Army was formed in 1775 to fight the war for independence from Britain, disbanded in 1783 and replaced by the current force in 1784. Although the senior service, it is also the largest branch of the US Armed Forces but is only the third biggest spender; at more than U$148 billion, however, its FY 2017 budget request represents a huge market for products and services for businesses of all sizes from the US and overseas. The military has long been a driver of technological development and an important partner for industry in generating economic growth and injecting new money into the private sector. The US Army has evolved and refined a set of mechanisms for connecting people and organisations and their innovative ideas with its own expertise and resources to help bring them to fruition.
