Helicopter Operations in Severe Conditions

Before military helicopters were deployed en masse to support NATO's ISAF in its campaign against the Taliban and al Qaeda in the mountains of Afghanistan, there was little widespread discussion about the need to operate at 6,000ft in 95°F (known as 6K/95). Most military helicopters designed from the early 1980s onwards had focused more on having to operate over land at much lower altitudes or in the maritime environment. Several types of helicopter were completely unsuitable for the military tasks required above 4,000ft (1,220m), which turned out was most of Afghanistan.
