Anti-ship missile systems are both a defensive and offensive means to influence access to global commons in any given maritime environment. Rising tensions in various coastal areas trigger both doctrinal and technological development, as coastal defence systems either secure or deny freedom of navigation and guarantee or jeopardise the right to transit or use international waters.
