De buitenlandse kritiek op Doormans handelen beperkt zich niet voornamelijk tot auteurs uit de jaren veertig en vijftig, zoals Jacques Brandt suggereert. Er zijn ook meer recente voorbeelden. Zo stelt T. Womack: 'Helfrich ... in a letter he wrote to Hart... I am afraid that... [Doorman]... has upset him ... As you know, I am entirely at your disposal and if you think that I should take command at sea of the Combined Forces myself, I will only be too glad to do so.'7 D. Kehn zegt: 'Admiral Doorman ... went out with a mixed force ... of five cruisers and ten destroyers which were a pretty powerful lot. Doorman went up to near the most promising hunting grounds but didn't drive right into there. Of course the Jap air found him.
