Over the past decade, Patrick O'Donnell has firmly established himself as one of the worlds preeminent military historians. It is a reputation developed by many factors, but two stand out for me. First, O'Donnell selects subjects that have received little or no prior scholarship, or he puts a different perspective on these subjects. Second, he is incredibly gifted in transforming his exhaustive research into a highly readable narrative. In the author's latest volume, First SEALs, both of these factors are evident.
