Former moaa president Lt. Gen. Mike Nelson, USAF-Ret, and his wife, Barbie, always have loved to travel and considered seeing the world one of the major perks of his three-decade career in the U.S. Air Force. When Nelson retired for good several years ago, he and his wife had no intention of settling down; like many retirees, they decided they wanted to increase and expand their travel options. The couple has traveled the world by boat, plane, train, and automobile and takes at least one short trip every month and longer vacations two or three times a year. Last year, the Nelsons took two cross-country road trips from their home base in northern Virginia to the West Coast.
