Rakkasans Kick Off Operation

Components from the Iraq army and the 101st Airborne Division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team (BCT) "Rakkasans" kicked off Operation Marne Courageous by dropping 4,000 pounds of explosives on an island in the Euphrates River Nov. 16,2007, to prevent Iraqi insurgents from using the island as an asylum. Marne Courageous is aimed at securing the Iraqi populations of Owesat and Betra by creating a permanent presence on the west side of the Euphrates River.
