The Great War for Peace

George F. Kennans bekanntes Diktum vom Ersten Weltkrieg als »great seminal catastrophe« des 20. Jahrhunderts ist in den letzten Jahren im Rahmen des Zentenariums von ganz verschiedenen Seiten immer wieder bemüht worden. Das anzuzeigende Buch des irischen Historikers William Mulligan wendet sich explizit gegen diese Deutung: Das wichtigste Vermächtnis des Ersten Weltkrieges, so Mulligans Zentralthese, sei nicht die Zerrüttung der Weltordnung mit dem Zusammenbruch politischer Strukturen und kultureller Ordnungsmuster gewesen, nicht die Krise der klassischen Moderne und die katalysatorische Funktion des glo- balen Konflikts für Kommunismus und Faschismus, sondern ganz im Gegenteil ein vertieftes Nachdenken über den Frieden und die Etablierung der Friedensidee als Fluchtpunkt politischen Handelns: »Peace was at the centre of the First World War, providing meaning to the conflict. In turn, peace was imagined and constructed in new ways that had an enduring legacy in twentieth Century international relations [...] Peace became a conceptual repository, a short-hand for people's aspirations for a better, more just, and more prosperous world. Its meaning expanded in the First World War [...] Peace [...] came to embrace a much wider and deeper set of social and international relations, including labour regulations, the principle of nationality, constitutional reform, trusteeship, wel-fare, transnational associations, and international institutions« (S. 4f.).
