The president of Yemen is the commander-in-chief of the country's armed forces. All day-to-day decisions, however, are made by the minister of defense. In 1990, the government announced the formation of a National Defense Council called Majlis al-Difa al-Watani, which is responsible for overseeing all matters related to the military.
