Guided by the National Security Strategy, the Armenian Ministry of Defense ensures that the nation's security interests are met. This responsibility extends to the Nagorno-Karabakh region, where the Armenian military reserves a role as guarantor of territorial sovereignty. Armenia has adopted a Western-style, civilian-led command structure to implement the security prerogatives defined by the National Security Strategy. Serving in the capacity of commander in chief, the president retains authority over the Ministry of Defense and is responsible for devising security policy. Traditionally, the defense minister has acted as the executive agent of such policy. In April 2008, Seyran Ohanyan replaced Mikhael A. Harutyunyan as minister of defense. Harutyunyan currently serves as presidential military advisor to former Defense Minister and current President Serzh Sargsyan.
