Engineers at Eurotech in Amaro, Italy, and Parvus Corp. in Salt Lake City combined a wearable display and wear-able computer into the rugged, wrist-worn Zypad WR1100 that eventually could replace laptop computers in the field, says Roberto Turchi, marketing manager for wearable and mobile computers at Eurotech.rnThe device, which is worn on the wrist so it does not interfere with the user, was shown at the MILCOM 2008 conference and exhibition last month in San Diego. For example, instead of using a laptop to view images from an unmanned aerial vehicle like a Predator, the operator on the ground could view it on the Zypad, thus "freeing hisrnhands up tor other tasks, says Mike Southworth, director of marketing for Parvus. Some companies that make a wrist-worn display with a computer worn on the belt, but the Zypad combines both in one form factor for the wrist, he notes. The Zypad is an example of "pervasive computing or ubiquitous computing," Southworth says. "It is where the computerrnbecomes a part of your everyday life such as a PDA or cell phone."
