Phase noise in phase-locked loops (PLLs) can originate from a number of sources. Fortunately, commercial SPICE software tools, such as PSPIGE, can effectively model not only the loop dynamics of a PLL, but also the circuit elements of the loop and the combined effects of the noise sources. The final part of this three-part series on modeling PLLs will show how loop modeling can be used to predict synthesizer phase-noise performance.
