摘要

One of the abiding concerns of students of social change is how movements sustain themselves after the initial heady phase of organizing around an issue has waned. Do individuals and groups brought together from different perspectives stay committed to the purpose as originally constituted, or do the differences become more salient, leading in some cases to the formation of new organizations? How successful are such new efforts? The Archives of the Atlanta Lesbian Feminist Alliance (ALFA) collection is an excellent source for tracing the pathway of radical lesbians in Atlanta who found neither the Women's Liberation Center (the local seat of the women's movement) nor the Gay Liberation movement answering their needs. Instead, they formed ALFA in 1972. Until ALFA disbanded in 1994, members used it as a base from which they worked on lesbian, feminist, gay, and other social justice issues and took part in cultural activities related to those communities, all of which are documented in the collection.
