Moduli spaces of stable curves and stable maps play a prominent role in algebraic geometry, symplectic topology, and string theory. Many geometric results have been obtained by using the fact that the moduli space M_(0,k)(P~n,d) of degree-d stable maps from genus-0 curves with k marked points into P~n is a smooth unidi-mensional orbivariety of the expected dimension. This is not the case for positive-genus moduli spaces M_(g,k)(P~n,d).
