Roll coating is an efficient method for applying finishes to flat substrates. The coated material is intended to be postformed into a variety of complex shapes without detriment to substrate or finish. Two distinct classifications exist for roll coating: (1) direct roll coating, which is a sheet-fed process that has been used for many years in the can and metal decorating industries, and (2) reverse roll coating, commonly termed coil coating, which uses continuous coil feed stock. Both processes are used to coat steel, aluminum, and tinplate.
