Preparing paint for use requires mixing. Fire and explosion are the two key hazards associated with mixing operations. The degree of a fire or explosion hazard depends on the quantity of flammable liquid, its flash point, method of handling, ventilation, amount of confinement, and the temperatures of the flammable liquids and the room. A paint mix room, sometimes called a paint kitchen, provides a safe area to prepare paint for use on the finishing line (see Fig. 1). The room also can be used for dispensing coatings to the line by employing circulation systems―saving labor, reducing material loss, keeping the line running smoothly, and providing a safe environment. Sometimes the room is also used for the storage of coatings prior to use, although a separate enclosure for this purpose is preferred. Generally, only one day's supply of coatings should be kept in the mix room at any one time. Often, a paint storage area is located adjacent to the mix room and is separated by a fire-resistant door. When adding a paint mix room to a new or existing building, a special permit may be required. It is advisable to check with the local fire department for its recommendations. All local, state, and federal codes should be followed, and a review of the proposed installation by the insurance carrier is recommended. In some instances, in order to safeguard a manufacturing facility, mixing operations are located away from the main buildings, particularly when an explosion hazard exists or where water damage is a possibility; in such circumstances, an outside location at least 75 ft from the main building is preferred. If less than 1,500 gallons of liquid is involved and only a fire hazard exists, the mix room can be located a distance of 25 ft from the main building. Mixing operations are best located in a single-story detached building without a basement or below-grade spaces. Noncombustible or fire-resistant construction is recommended. Closer locations require a 1-hour fire-resistant wall. Sprinklers are preferred. Should a room explosion hazard exist, the building construction must include pressure-relieving walls or roofs.
