Heavy metals are known to cause harm to the - environment and can eventually be found in the human food chain. As regulatory pressures tighten, manufacturers involved in electroplating, metal finishing, and related industries are required to remove more heavy metals from their wastewater before final discharge. HA 216 is produced by the dry distillation of crushed clean bone, at temperatures up to l,000 deg C to produce a porous granular material. The particle size of the product can be manufactured to meet requirements but is normally in the range 0.25 to 20 mm. During this "dry distillation" process, organic compounds are reduced to elemental carbon (with the evolution of volatiles), the calcium phosphate component of bone is restructured into a mineral form with increased activity.
