The use of robots in the manufacturing process has become a familiar and almost expected sight in the last 10 years. Many of the lessons learned in the 1980s by the automotive manufacturers for applying robots have been passed along to other industries that have been slower to adapt the high-tech solutions (see Fig.1, information courtesy of the Robotics Industry Association). Today, the manufacturer of quality products at maximum throughput levels and at the lowest possible cost are the driving forces behind the justification of robotic equipment. As with other high-tech equipment, such as computers, painting robots have basically maintained stable price levels while continuing to add capabilities. This, coupled with the several generations of refinements made to painting robots in the last 15 years, now makes robots more attractive to a wider variety of manufacturing industries.
