An Indian consortium led bySteel Authority India Ltd (SAIL) has won the rights to mine major iron ore deposits in Afghanistan. Progress on the project could be slow and risky, however, experts in India warned. The Afghan Ministry of Mines announced on November28 that Afisco (Afghan Iron &Steel Consortium) has been awarded blocks B, C and D in the Hajigak concessions, which are estimated to hold 1.8 billion tonnes of iron ore with an Fe content of 6^%. As well as setting up operations in Hajigak, Bamyan province, 130km west of the capital, Kabul, Afisco is expected to build a 7million-tpysteelplantandan 800MW power plant.
