Essex Property Trust is a self-administered and self-managed real estate investment trust. Co. owns all of its interest in its real estate and other investments directly or indirectly through Essex Portfolio, L.P. Co. is engaged primarily in the ownership, operation, management, acquisition, development and redevelopment of primarily apartment communities. As of Dec 31 2016, Co. owned or had ownership interests in 245 apartment communities (aggregating 59,645 apartment homes), two operating commercial buildings, and six active development projects. The communities are located in Southern California, Northern California and the Seattle metropolitan areas.
