Conventional ring-spun yarn was compared with compact yarn from the fibre to the finished fabric in the context of a semester study project. The technological differences in the various process stages of piece-dyed shirting fabrics were identified for this purpose. Starting from the same raw material with identical preparation and yarn twist, it was established that the compact spinning process offers significant advantages. These result not only from better yarn values, but are especially apparent in improved running properties on the weaving machine, reduced fibre fly and a more attractive, clean fabric appearance.
