PLA plant project in China

The US PLA producer NatureWorks LLC, Min-netonka, MN, is searching for a site for its second plant, and the company hopes to (eventually) start manufacturing in China. NatureWorks1 new site will be completed by 2013/2014 with US$ 300 million investment and 140,000 tons/year capacity. The import procedure of PLA materials from the US to China adds 30% to the original cost. NatureWorks feels that PLA should not be treated like other petroleum-based polymers. Because of the price difference, some Chinese companies only use PLA in products that are destined for export markets.
