The process step "shearing" is of high importance in the textile finishing chain. In this production stage, the appearance of the textile product is significantly influenced. For example, in the case of flat textiles, protruding fibers are removed and in the case of articles with a pile layer (e.g. plush, woven fur and carpets), the top side of the fabric is leveled. The shearing is performed mechanically according to the principle of the "pulled cut". In this process, a fixed lower blade works together with so-called shearing spirals. The f i bers are cut at the point of contact between the lower blade and the shearing spirals. The shearing spirals are generally wound on a cylinder, like the thread of a screw. Due to the rotation of the cylinder together with the winded arrangement of the shearing spirals, the contact point and thus the cutting point moves along the lower blade. In order to prevent the fibers from escaping from the moving cutting point during shearing, the shearing spirals are provided with a notch-shaped structure. The fineness or density of the notch structure is referred to in specialist circles as the (file) cut. To achieve an optimal shearing result, the cut must be adjusted to the fiber fineness of the fabric to be processed. If the cut is too coarse for fine fiber fineness or too fine for coarser fibers, the fabric appearance will be poor. In the worst case, the fibers are not cut at all.
