The effect of alkali treatment on physical properties of 100% polyester fabric has been studied using NaOH, KOH, rapid weighting agent and weight reducing agent. For this purpose, 4 different 100% polyester samples were taken and scoured with sodium carbonate and then heat set. This was followed by testing for physical properties like warp and weft denier, wickability and tearing strength. The fabric was then scoured with sodium carbonate and heat set again. Both the samples were then given weight reduction treatment with different amounts of NaOH and rapid weighting agent, NaOH and weight reducing agent, KOH and rapid weighting agent, KOH and weight reducing agent and KOH and combination of both. A reduction not only in the number of ends per inch, picks per inch, fabric weight, warp and weft yarn count occurred, but also a reduction in wicking time and tearing strength occurred, while percentage wettability increases.
