This is the twentieth volume in the series 'History of modern medicine and science', under the general editorship of Wolfgang U. Eckart, the director of the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine at Heidelberg University. He has co-edited the present volume (which is largely in German) with a colleague from the same institute, and both have also contributed chapters.
