摘要

Maddox's (this issue) description of talk and gesture as a neglected source of data on interaction and response processes in testing situations is insightful and thought provoking. I believe that since the publication of Messick's groundbreaking review of validity (Messick, 1989) the field of measurement, assessment, and testing has been calling out for a new and expanded evidential basis for test validation. Maddox's program of research answers that call by adding a new and exciting voice with an anthropological perspective and tone. Maddox s work speaks broadly to how we conceptualize measurement, assessment, and testing in addition to how we consider response processes and validation practices. I will focus my observations and remarks on the conceptualization of response processes, the importance of in vivo and ecological views, and how responses processes speak to validity theory and validation practices.
