This is part one of the special issue of Mathematics and Computers in Simulation on "Nonlinear Waves: Computation and Theory, WAVES 2009" that includes a limited number of refereed papers presented at the Sixth IMACS International Conference on "Nonlinear Evolution Equations and Wave Phenomena: Computation and Theory" which was held in Athens, GA, USA, 23 -26 March 2009. This special issue is a follow up of ten recent special issues that followed the conferences in 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2009 in the same journal. It is focused on computation and theoretical aspects of nonlinear wave phenomena. We hope that this issue will prove to be a timely and valuable reference to researchers in the field.
